The Our Lady of Lebanon monument sits overlooking the bay of Jounieh, in the village of Harissa just over an hour from Beirut. This is one of the most important Christian monuments in the country, but even if you’re not interested in the religious side of things it’s worth coming up here for the wonderful views across the coastline. The statue is made of bronze and weighs 15 tonnes, with a height of 8.5 metres, and Mary is depicted stretching her hands out to Beirut.
With your guide you can either simply drive up to the site, or if you fancy something a little more adventurous there is a cable car that takes you from the shores at Jounieh right up to Harissa. The ride takes just 10 minutes and is a fun way to experience the panoramas that open up the higher you get.
